How does acupuncture work in treating Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia or Panic Attacks? (Part 8 in a Series from The Acupuncture Wellness Center in Los Angeles CA)
In Part 1 of this series I mentioned that the most frequently asked question at The Acupuncture Wellness in Los Angeles CA is “How does acupuncture work?” I further mentioned that the answer depends on what you are treating and that acupuncture needles do one of the following:
1. Acupuncture needles affect the muscles and tissue that need treating directly.
2. Acupuncture needles promote or inhibit specific functions of the central nervous system.
How does acupuncture work in treating Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Insomnia or Panic Attacks? In the case of stress, depression, anxiety insomnia and panic attacks, although the primary focus is on relaxing the central nervous system, some common pain symptoms associated with the above are tight shoulders, stomach problems, head aches, back pain, etc. In these cases needles may be inserted directly into affected areas of pain. A slight electro-stimulation may be applied to the needles causing them to vibrate and help increase blood circulation in and around the painful tissue. This will assure neuro-muscular re-education and eliminate the pain cycle via percutaneous electronic nerve stimulation (PENS). PENS applied can eliminate pain. By simply eliminating pain the patient can make great strides in conquering stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia and panic attacks.
However, in treating stress, depression, anxiety, insomnia and panic attacks, the main focus is on relaxing the central nervous system. In treating any of the above, needles will be placed strategically to relax the central nervous system, taking it out of the stress mode and putting it into the mode of optimal homeostasis. This allows the patients intellect and logic to prevail rather than overwhelming emotions that are ever present in these situations. Studies show that acupuncture is just as effective as medications in treating stress, depression, anxiety and insomnia without having to worry about addiction, side effects or liver damage.
In addition to the above diet, exercise, cognitive behavioral modifications and herbal remedies can all play a roll and will be discussed. The goal of treatments at The Acupuncture Wellness Center in Los Angeles CA is to teach patients how to maintain excellent health on their own without continuous acupuncture treatments.
