Human Microbiome

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Include Diet and Nutrition and Treat Inflammation

Many recent studies have shown a correlation between neurological disease and unhealthy gastrointestinal flora otherwise referred to as the human microbiome or simply the microbiome. The human microbiome should consist of a balance of different types of bacteria that will assist in digestion and overall well-being including neurological and cognitive health. However, for many different reasons the types of bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract can change over time. An unhealthy microbiome can ultimately lead to systemic inflammation that may ultimately lead to some of the most debilitating neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. However, before progressing to this level an unhealthy microbiome can contribute to other health issues such as:

  • ADHD
  • Asthma
  • Food Sensitivities
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Cancer
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Diabetes
  • Cravings for Sugar and Carbohydrates
  • Obesity
  • Poor Memory
  • Lack of Focus
  • Celiac Disease
  • IBS
  • Chronic Constipation
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Frequent Cold and Infections
  • Insomnia
  • Painful Joints, Inflammation, Arthritis
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Acne and Eczema
  • Bad Breath
  • Other
  • A consultation with Dr. Barrett at The Acupuncture Wellness Center will include a full discussion of Diet and Nutrition in addition to the presence of any inflammation playing a role in your condition and how adjusting your microbiome may optimize your health, healing, and longevity. Some of the basics principals of balancing your microbiome include:

    • A diet rich in probiotics such as supplements and yogurt, kefir, kambucha, sauerkraut, pickles and pickled fruits, and vegetables
    • Balance carbohydrates, proteins, and high quality fats
    • Drinking flavonoid rich beverages such as organic raw hot chocolate and green tea
    • Eat prebiotic foods that help make probiotics such as onions, garlic, leeks, dandelion greens, and raw asparagus
    • Drink filtered water as chlorine can disturb the balance of the microbiome
    • Periodic fasting

It is highly recommended that you minimize your intake of processed sugars that come in the form of pastries and sweets. Any food containing high fructose corn syrup should be avoided when possible. Soda, fruit juices without pulp, and foods high in fructose and sugar without fiber should be minimized. Although fruit may be high in fructose because it is a fiber rich composition it is not damaging to the microbiome. Gluten can also cause problems on the microbiome and should be controlled. In addition one needs to pay attention to prescription drugs and chemical found in our environment that can all contribute to an unhealthy microbiome leading to other health issues. Also, try to eat fresh seasonal foods as much as you can and prepare your own meals. This might seem like a huge adjustment but all will be discussed including some common sense methods to make everything easy to fit your life style will be discussed during your consultation. The objective is to find one works for you and your health.

Dr. Barrett’s Testimonials for Treating Various Symptoms with Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Human Microbiome:

Treating Ideopathic Musclular Pain with Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine and the Human Microbiome:

Gale, Age 31: “I have had mixed experiences with other Acupuncturists, and was pretty skeptical to give it a try again. But getting acupuncture from Dr. Barrett was better than I could have ever imagined. The amount of relief that I experienced from my muscle pain was a hundred times greater than previous acupuncture treatments. The pain that felt debilitating when I came in was completely gone by the time I left. I felt like a new person - not just relieved but refreshed and energized, with a sense of peace and wellness. Just the acupuncture would have been enough to keep me coming back, but Dr. Barrett is more than just an acupuncturist, he's a specialist in Eastern Medicine. The herbal supplements he recommended were exactly what I needed to continue to feel relief and energy between treatments. The dietary changes he suggested also made a big difference too. I really appreciated the time he took to explain to me why and how the treatments worked when I asked. He could translate the theory behind it so that I could understand it. It was so reassuring and comforting to really get what was happening during the treatment.”

Treating Digestion, Circulation, and Allergies with Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Human Microbiome:

Leslie Age 28 : "I am eternally grateful for my former co-worker Lisa. Not only for her solid friendship but for her never disappointing doctor referrals. You see Lisa had a doctor referral and matching phone number for just about everything and then one day she gave me a referral for something I never even asked for. Oddly enough, this turned out to be the referral I needed the most. One afternoon Lisa came rushing over to my desk preaching about the wonders of a healer she had just encountered. "Healer?" I thought to myself as she told me about a certain Dr. John Barrett. She told me how he healed her excruciating foot pain, how he was so bright and charming and how she was convinced everyone in our law firm could benefit from a visit with him. Shortly thereafter i decided to schedule an appointment with Dr. Barrett. My problem was I didn't necessarily have a particular problem, ailment or pain. Something told me I just had to experience the wonders of this supposed healer. Lunch time visit # 1= WOW!!!! Not only did I leave completely relaxed, I left completely energized. Despite my belief that I didn't "need" treatment, I soon realized my entire system was off balance. My hands and feet were always cold - I chalked that up to being slender and poor circulation. My digestion sucks - I figured that's just the way I am wired, I'd been like that all my life. No one treatment or person can really help me. After just one visit and some pretty thorough questions from Dr. Barrett, I realized not only was I wrong about all of the above and that there was a way to rid myself of all these problems. Today my circulation/body temperature is better, the allergies I go to see him for subside after my visits and my digestion has greatly improved. Four years later I continue my visits to Dr. Barrett. And he is always right on. His dietary tips, his suggestions to meditate, consider yoga or really harness my energy towards what I desire. Beyond all of this he is a wildly fascinating, kind, insightful man. I've told him time and time again "you really ARE a healer." He kind of just shrugs off the compliments. If anything, this man isn't cocky and he isn't out to take you money or feed you supplements. Somehow he just gets it. I have never left his office feeling I have anything but a stellar experience. If any of you are seeking a truly skilled acupuncturist I urge you to call Dr. Barrett. I know I will never let him go.”

Treating with Gastrointestinal Issues with Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Human Microbiome:

Rachel, Age 26: "Dr. Barrett is by far the best! I have been in doctors’ offices for years due to stomach problems that most doctors couldn’t figure out and would just throw some pills at me and say here try this. So I got fed up with western medicine and sought out the eastern way. Dr. Barrett really helped me and got my stomach back to normal, and he replaced the pills they were giving me with Chinese herbs and I had way better results. The staff is really friendly and the best part is that they take insurance. The staff works really hard to call your insurance company for you and see if your insurance is accepted because they know how to talk to the insurance companies so they found out I could get the benefits even though I had been told I was not covered. Unfortunately my parents switched insurance companies and now I am not covered and cannot afford to go very often, but before I was going twice a week for over a year! Dr. Barrett is highly recommended to help any type of pain or illness. He listens and is very caring and compassionate. One of the best doctors I have ever met!”
