Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine Include Diet and Nutrition

Along with Acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Herbs, and Therapeutic Exercises, Diet and Nutrition is a very important part of your treatments with Traditional Chinese Medicine. You are what you eat. The food in our diets contains the necessary nutrition and calories that we need to maintain optimal health, healing, and longevity.

Carbohydrates Should Be Restricted But Not Eliminated

Carbohydrates mostly consist of fruits, vegetables, and grains. They are noted for providing quick energy to support our activities in hours one and two after consumed. If we cannot burn them in hours one and two after consumed, our bodies will convert them to fat for later consumption. Burning fat primarily happens during cardiovascular exercise. Without cardio we will keep the fat on our bodies and overconsumption of carbohydrates can lead to obesity. Thus, carbohydrates have earned a bad reputation. However they play a key role in our metabolism and contain many nutrients necessary for a healthy diet. Carbs need to be restricted but not eliminated. As part of your consultation you will be instructed as to how many calories of carbohydrates are ideal for your lifestyle.

Most Diets Are Deficient In Protein

Proteins can be found in many sources including meats, poultry, fish, beans, dairy products, and eggs. Although many people seek cheese and nuts as a protein source, it should be noted that these foods are 80% fat and only 20% protein. Therefore, they should be considered more as fats than proteins. When buying meats and poultry it is best to purchase those from sources that have been grass fed, hormones free, and free of antibiotics. Proteins are essential for heathy muscle tissue and brain power. Protiens are burned in hours three and four after consumed. Like carbohydrates, if we overconsume them they can lead to obesity and constipation. However, the typical diet in the U.S. is short on protein and thus they have not earned the same bad reputation as carbohydrates. As part of your consultation, we will examine your intake of proteins and evaluate how many calories from protein that you need to optimize your health.

Unsaturated Fats Should Be Favored Over Other Fats

Fats are found in many vegetables and oils. Fats are essential to our health. There are three basic types of fats. Trans fats found in many processed foods, saturated fats found in most meats and dairy products, and unsaturated fats found in most plant products. Trans fats are the least healthy and should be avoided. Saturated fats are the second least healthy and should be consumed lightly. Unsaturated fats are healthy for the brain and vasculature and should be favored as a fat in your diet. It should be noted that fats are burned in hours five and six after consumed and can also lead to obesity if overconsumed. Therefore, the role of fats in your diet will also be discussed in your consultation.

In addition to your personal requirements for carbohydrates, proteins, and fats in your diet, the nature of the types you consume and which are best for you specifically will be discussed. For example, there are some fruits and vegetables such as cherries, grapes, beats and raspberries that are good for your blood and circulation that may be favored while other carbohydrates such as raw vegetable and beans that may lead to gassiness and bloating will be avoided. Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the medicinal qualities of foods to favor for your condition while also looking at what antagonistic qualities certain foods may have that should be avoided in your condition. All will be discussed in your consultation with detailed guidelines given for you to follow.
